The courses below are recommended for clinicians moving into a management role with nursing. The Nursing Clinical Education Center typically registers inpatient nursing hires for appropriate Epic training, and Ambulatory Care handles registration of clinic nursing hires. However, these summary documents provide guidance about what new staff should attend.

Prerequisite Training Tracks for Nurses/Managers

If the prerequisite nurse training for a manager's new location has not already been taken, here are links to applicable course pages with information about online or email registration. (Example: as a nurse the manager received Inpatient RN classes but will now be managing a clinic, Labor Delivery, the ED, or a Procedural Area.)

Inpatient Managers

Class Length: 3.5 hours

Prerequisites: Inpatient RN series

Registration: E-mail epictrainingrequests@healthcare.uiowa.edu

Roles: Inpatient charge nurses or managers, Nursing Unit Clerks, and Nursing Assistants cross-training as clerks.

Content: An overview of Hyperspace and Bed Board. In-depth exploration of the Unit Manager activity including care areas and the legend, managing bed requests and bed blocks, completion of Direct Admits and Incoming Transfers, Patient Transport, Update Patient Location, Discharge, and Event Management.

Clinic Managers

Depending on the clinic, managers may find benefit from re-attending all (or part of) the Clinic Nursing Series and/or the Cadence for Clinical Staff courses. Reporting Workbench (below) should be considered mandatory.

Both Inpatient & Clinic Managers

Class Length: 3 hours

Prerequisites: Reporting Workbench Workbook & Online Assessment

Prerequisite Note: If you are already familiar with Reporting Workbench basics, you may skip straight to the assessment. Click on the link and follow the instructions under the "Complete the Online Assessment" section on page 10.

Registration: Registration information is automatically emailed to users who received a passing score on the assessment. If you have already completed the assessment and received a passing score, click here to register.

Roles: All staff with Epic access may attend with their supervisor's permission.

Content: An introductory course for how to find, create, modify, and run reports in Epic. Training on more advanced concepts (or role/department-specific reports) can be provided upon request.
