The following resources provide information on Beacon functionality for both pediatric and adult patients unless specifically stated.

Quick Start Guide

  • Utilizing Treatment Plans - (Handout) A comprehensive guide to creating and modifying treatment plans for adult and pediatric oncology and non-oncology providers, nurses, and pharmacists.

Manage Plans

  • Add an Order Group to a Treatment Plan - (Handout) When you have an existing treatment plan, you have an option to add additional orders or order groups as needed. Order groups are useful when there are multiple associated pre-medications, communications, or special prescriptions. You can also find certain prescription order groups that are helpful when there are multiple associated with one medication.
  • Add / Replace Preferred Pharmacy (and Send Orders to Multiple Pharmacies) - (Handout) For adult patients, update the pharmacy (or pharmacies) that new prescriptions will be sent to both for the current encounter and to save time in future encounters.
  • Auto-Complete Treatment Days - (Handout) The act of Completing a Day can occur automatically through a nightly process if certain criteria are met.
  • Create a Medical Center Downtown Infusion Plan for Medical Center University Providers - (Handout) It is NOT appropriate for all patients to transition infusions to Medical Center Downtown (MCD) Infusion due to medication purchasing differences between Medical Center University (MCU) and MCD. Specifically, oncology patients or patients with high-cost medications should NOT have care transitioned to MCD Infusion. MCU providers can utilize the steps included to create an infusion plan for patients to receive treatment at MCD Infusion if appropriate.
  • Modify Treatment Plan Orders After Released - (Handout) Once a treatment plan has been established for a patient and orders have been released, it may be necessary to modify treatment. This may include deleting, adding, and changing existing orders. The workflows will depend on provider type and whether chemotherapy orders will be modified.
  • OBG Oncology Release Labs from Treatment Plans - (Handout) When appropriate, OBG Oncology front desk staff can release lab orders from Treatment Plans through the Visit Navigator.
  • Oral Chemotherapy - Temodar - (Handout) Prescribing oral chemotherapy is similar to ordering other prescriptions in Epic, but there are extra tools to streamline the process. The system automatically chooses the correct products to achieve the desired dosage, and you can adjust the individual products and their instructions if needed.
  • Order Propagation in Treatment Plans - (Handout) Clinicians working in Beacon can modify Treatment Plan orders and then select which days or cycles should receive the changes.
  • Swapping Biosimilars in Treatment Plans - (Handout) Scenario-specific guidance on how to swap or replace a current medication in a treatment plan with a preferred biosimilar.
  • Treatment Plans from Orders/Notes Encounters - (Handout) Some clinical staff are able to create, manage, and edit Treatment Plans from an Orders/Notes Encounter. This type of encounter provides access to the Beacon functionality when you might not otherwise have access, for example when you are between encounters with the patient (assuming the staff member has sufficient security within Epic, such as Nurse or LIP/Provider access).
  • Workflow for Outpatient Antibiotic Infusion Plans - (Handout) There are two antibiotic infusion plan templates available for when a patient needs an outpatient infusion.
  • Workflow for Outpatient Iron Infusion Plans - (Handout) There are iron infusion plan templates available for when a patient needs an infusion outpatient.
  • Working with Plans from In Basket - (Handout) Treatment Plan details and related messages can be sent directly to a user's In Basket to streamline communications and facilitate access and modifications to the plan.
